Rest Areas

Show On The Map
Rest areas, also known as rest stops, are designated areas along highways and interstates that provide a safe and convenient place for motorists to take a break from driving. These areas typically include restrooms, picnic tables, and other amenities to make the experience more comfortable for drivers.

The creation of rest areas can be traced back to the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, which established the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways. This legislation included provisions for the construction of safety rest areas along the highways to provide drivers with a safe place to rest and recharge during their journeys.

As highways were constructed in remote and previously lightly traveled areas, facilities for motorists were often sparsely located, making it difficult for drivers to find safe places to rest. To address this issue, the American Association of State Highway Officials released a policy document in 1958 that outlined site guidelines and national standardization requirements for rest areas.

Today, rest areas are a critical component of the U.S. highway system, providing drivers with a safe and convenient place to take a break during long journeys. Whether traveling for business or pleasure, rest areas offer a welcome respite from the road, allowing drivers to rest, recharge, and continue on their journey with renewed energy and focus.

Elisha Pick for DOT WEIGHT STATION REST STOP
One of the cleanest restrooms of a rest stop I have ever gone to. The water smelled quite weird, hence the 'Do Not Drink Water' sign. Overall fine.

Nice weight station can’t drink the water though it’s all over the place posted DO NOT DRINK WATER. I mean I wouldn’t drink it regardless but they do have vending machines one of the vending machines is done. The one that does hot drinks (coffee)

This rest stop was very convenient on our way to Maryland. There was enough parking, and the restrooms were clean. There were also some brochures available for places of interest in the area. We were glad that we didn't have to get off the highway to find a restroom on our trip.

Beautiful wooded rest area. The restroom buildings sit on wetland with beautiful walking trail. I love the good theme inside, very clean and well maintained. Thanks to the property management staff. Plus, there are picnic pavilion outside too. Nice setting. ♥️

Clean plenty of car parking. You may have to navigate your wat through all the parked semi trucks in the early morning that are parked there overnight. It's not directly of the expressway with one facility serving both east and west travel.

Sign out front lists all the things which the Commonwealth prohibits you from doing rather than a list of all the things which you may do at this rest stop. Besides that, most of the vending machines were in working order. The landscaping and masonry were very nice. The bathrooms were clean. There are picnic tables outside for anyone who in December wants to die from pneumonia.

Busted water fountain in the desert. Was thinking about spending the night here, but not without drinking water. This is really annoying! EDIT: Decided I have to drive 50 miles to the next rest area for water. This was supposed to be my landing spot but now here I am trying to wake up and go so I can be healthy tomorrow. FURTHERMORE: Don’t bother driving to the Vaughn NM rest area for water! That one has the water fountains labeled “NON-POTABLE”. So you’ll have to get off the interstate somewhere to look for water! NEW MEXICO GET YOUR REST AREAS IN ORDER!

My husband and I stopped at this rest area on our way down to Florida. The rest area is easily accessible with plenty of parking. The rest area has restrooms, wi-fi, picnic areas, and food/drink vending machines. The rest area and restrooms are very clean. If you need to stretch your legs and/or use the restrooms, the Hendersonville Rest Area Southbound is the place to do it!

Superclean and there's definitely a park for you to walk the dogs or simply just get out of the car and stretch your legs after a long trip. Great rest stop.

Prices were fine and having McD attached makes sense. HOWEVER .. the men's room was borderline gross. Maybe the women's is okay ... but one reason for stopping is biology. I buy things when I stop for this reason (bio needs) and recognize the difficulty in maintaining those spaces. In this instance, there is no convenient second option. So whatever .. live with it and complain a bit on the review.

This is a very large rest stop shared by both directions of the highway. It has extensive parking and picnic areas. Restrooms are clean. The water fountain has such tasty water I filled up my bottles to go. Plenty of quiet spots to rest and lots of trees.

This a decent rest stop, except for being so far off the interstate. The bathroom facilities🚻 are clean and big. There is also a specific, separate one for handicap individuals♿️. It has plenty of vending machines, for soda and snacks. Multiple picnic areas for eating or relaxing.

Nice place. Had to dump RV the place was fairly packed. But again it was nighttime. NO offense to truckers. It was a little tough maneuvering because instead of using parking area one guy was parked on the side fairly close to the dump area. Took some trying but I got in. Security offered to ask him to move, it really wasn't necessary why bother someone's rest. All in all a nice place. I'm not sure if freshwater was available. Wish they posted it. The handle at dump was the correct color just double check.

Good rest area overall. Decent amount of truck parking but of course we could always use 10 times as much. I like the nice smell of cleaner, which lets me know that someone is taking care of things. Vending machines.
