  1. 01

    Start with the manual

Read the relevant chapter in your state’s current CDL manual. Pay attention to inspections, safe operating procedures and vehicle systems.

  2. 02

    Focus on one topic

Begin with General Knowledge, then review Air Brakes and Combination Vehicles as appropriate for the vehicle you plan to drive.

  3. 03

    Review your weak spots

Write down unfamiliar terms and revisit the matching manual section. Use flashcards for recall, then try a practice test again.

PRACTICE IS ONE PART OF THE JOURNEY

Know what comes after preparation.

Your state licensing agency issues the CLP and explains its application, knowledge testing and documentation requirements. Practice tests are study aids; they do not issue a permit or count as ELDT certification.

Your questions,
answered.

A clearer picture of how to use the library and prepare for the next step.

Are these CDL practice tests free?

Yes. The practice tests and flashcard sets in this library are free to use. Select an available set to begin studying.

Which topic should I study first?

Start with General Knowledge to build a foundation. Then choose the vehicle-specific topics that apply to your planned license and vehicle. Your state manual explains the knowledge exams you need.

Are these the official permit exam questions?

These are practice materials, not the official state exam. Use them to check your understanding alongside the current CDL manual from your state licensing agency.

Do practice tests replace ELDT?

No. Entry-Level Driver Training is a separate requirement for certain first-time licenses, upgrades and endorsements. Review FMCSA’s ELDT guidance and use a registered training provider when required.

Why choose a state?

The state filter shows shared topic sets and any available sets assigned to that state. It does not guarantee a separate question bank for every state. Follow your state agency for its current application and testing process.
