One of the best stops of a road trip. Great walk around the little lake. I stopped here overnight two years ago. Easy to park even with a trailer. Clean area. Beautiful view. Night traffic was light enough I did not even get woken up. Clean bathroom. British Columbia seems to have the magic formula to make good rest stops

Kirk Dewhurst for Portal Lake Rest Area
Great rest area right on the Alberta and BC boarder. Ample parking and picnic tables and benches for seating. Washroom facilities are available here but are not flush toilets. There is a trail for hiking if that’s what you want to do. This rest area is beside a small lake so that is nice. You can walk to the BC boarder sign and get your picture if you want. Enjoyed the short stop here.

Portal Lake is a wonderful little lake right on the border between Alberta and British Columbia. There is a beautiful trail around parts of the lake that takes about twenty to thirty minutes to hike.

This rest area is one of my favorites. I've visited it twice and serene is the only word for it. It has walking trail so you can stretch out well and a place to sit at both ends. Washrooms and garbage containers and the changing province sign is gorgeous. I saw an eagle take flight from a tree at the far end the first time I visited. Ducks on the water the second. Just restful and lovely.
